The Center for Classical and Humanistic Studies (CECH) is a Research & Development Unit of the UC, based at FLUC. Anchored in Classical Studies, cultural heritage of humanity, it reflects on the classical matrix in the long term. Based on Greek and Latin Studies and Medieval and Renaissance Studies, with an emphasis on the Portuguese-speaking world, it extends its scientific work to Classical and Portuguese Cultural Heritage, of which Reception Studies, Food Heritage and Musical Backgrounds are three particularly dynamic areas. Literature, Philosophy, Ancient History and Archeology complete the repertoire of humanistic research promoted at CECH.

In 2010, CECH promoted, for the first time, Opera in Fieri, an initiative whose main objective was to create a debate space for young researchers to discuss the progress of their work. Although intended for researchers on Classical Studies, the purpose has always been to promote interdisciplinary discussions. In this way, it accepted proposals on other fields of study, as long as the main investigation was within the historical or conceptual limits of the so-called “Ancient World”. The last edition took place in 2017, in a co-organization of CECH and the Origin of Comédia, youth section of the Portuguese Association of Classical Studies. Returning to the spirit that led to the creation of Opera in Fieri, in 2022, the I Student-Forum of Classical and Humanistic Studies appears, continuing now in 2023 with the 2nd edition. The works are planned for two days, animated by two artistic moments, of expression of Intangible Cultural Heritage that mean a lot for our identity: Fado de Coimbra (Fado Section of the Academic Association of Coimbra) and Classical Theater (XXIII International Festival of Classical Theme Theater).

The forum's Executive Committee is made up of FLUC Classical Studies bachelor and doctoral students, its first promoters. As students and researchers, much of our intellectual work consists of discovering “things”, formulating ideas and linking them into coherent and well-founded discourses. In fact, we are creating explanatory hypotheses of what we are observing. Each of us has our "theses" to defend, before teachers and peers. Before reaching the 3rd cycle of studies, we lived other experiences of creating “theses”, both in the master's degree and in longer-term works prepared during the degree. This is why our student-forum is an inclusive space, designed to bring theses from various levels of training and research into dialogue!
